This blue dragon looks more like a Final Fantasy/Pokemon creature and washed up on Australia’s Gold Coast sands. This mysterious creature has been viewed by thousands around the globe, and was captured on video. The creature is actually a rare blue sea slug called Glaucus Atlanticus. It’s also known as a blue dragon, blue ocean snail, blue glaucus and blue angel by non-scientific communities. Pelagic is the name given to this rare blue dragon. It floats on top of water’s surface, and is then carried by the ocean currents or winds. Blue Dragons prey on larger organisms. Captive individuals are often known to attack each other and consume them. (Image from Wikipedia) The gas-filled stomach of the animal allows it to float upside-down due to its location. Its blue color serves as camouflage. The creature’s blue bottom faces up, which blends it in with the aqua blue. Its blue coloration protects it against harmful ultraviolet (UV), light. The ocean’s silver-grey bottom blends in with its silvery silvery sides. Lucinda Fry was the one who took this video and wrote: “Came upon this strange critter today at Broadbeach. The Blue Dragon is a Glaucus Atlanticus. It has a dangerous sting. Do not let its small size (1.25 inches) or unusual colours fool you. As a defense against predators, it stores the stinging parasites in its tissues. You can expect to be stung by one if you attempt to touch it. Blue dragons can hold the venom from their prey such as jellyfish or Portuguese man o’ war. According to biologists, they are capable of eating jellyfish 10 times larger than their own.
