. After a number of horrifying videos showing them eating porpoises, the British coastguard has noticed that some of their seal friends have developed an appetite for bigger live animals. Experts fear they might turn against human swimmers. It is not clear why seals are eating and attacking porpoises. This behavior has never been seen in British waters before. But zoologists claim that killer seals are being reported elsewhere in the world. One video clip, taken off the coast in Pembrokeshire (South West Wales), shows a male seal cutting up a piece of porpoise flesh. Grey seals can be large. Dr. Tony Stringell of Environment Agency Wales stated that while people should not panic but that seals can be dangerous. He said that he had seen the seals on at least four occasions near Pembrokeshire. What is the reason porpoises are dying? Ecologists are still trying to figure out why so many porpoises have died. According to them, the video evidence supports the Dutch study that seals are responsible for the deaths. Grey seals, which can be aggressive and dangerous to humans should not be taken lightly. Mardik Leopold from the Institute for Marine Resources and Ecosystem Studies (Netherlands) was quoted by the Daily Express as saying: “Many of these mutilated porpoises have been found on Dutch beaches used often by humans bathers and surfers and it would seem that there is no reason to believe that grey seals will attack humans in the future.” According to some marine biologists, seals may be competing for more food.
