Calbuco volcano is located in southern Chile’s Los Lagos Region. It has been erupting for the first times since 1972.. The eruptions of the stratovolcano have occurred multiple times since 1837.. Local media reports that authorities instructed emergency service personnel to evacuate four ,000 persons within a 12 mile radius, ‘as precaution’. InfoBae reports that 5 ,000 were evacuated. Terra Chile reports that there was an additional eruption at 4am GMT (4am GMT), which led to a red alert for the area. The National Service for Geology and Mining, Servicio Nacional de Geologia y Mineria and OVDAS (Observatorio Vulcanologico de los Andes del Sur – Southern Andean Volcano Observatory), have both recommended that the evacuation 12- mile radius be continued. The Calbuco volcano erupts. Many people reside in the nearby communities. Authorities declared that Puerto Montt’s and Puerto Varas are under a “high risk” status because of the current eruption. The Ministry of the Interior stated that more than 4 ,000 persons have been evacuated from Correntoso and Colonia Rio Sur as well as Alerce, Ensenada, Los Lagos, and Alerce. There are 60,000 residents in the affected area. More evacuations will be necessary if there is any volcanic activity. The declaration was made in Llanquihue, the province of Chile and Puerto Octay the municipality. An 11. curfew has been imposed by authorities. 45pm-5am curfew has been set for Puerto Octay and Puerto Varas. This is to protect the homes of the evacuated residents and prevent thefts from businesses. The entire region has been closed to schools until further notice. The Comite Operativo de Emergencia, the Interior Minister, convened an urgent meeting in Santiago, one hour after the eruption. He urged residents to remain calm and keep in touch with the National Emergency Office and military. In a statement, Mr. Penailillo stated that the National Emergency Office had issued a call to all citizens to “Hacemos un Lulado to all persons who live in or near Calbuco Volcano” (“Hacemos un Lulado a Todas Las Personas Que Vienen En La Zone Al Volcan Calbuco A que Evacuen y Men todas las Medidas Preventivas para Resguardar Su Seguridad”) The volcano has been inactive for more than forty years. President Bachelet said there was a possibility of lava flowing, which would cause river flooding and increase ice melt.
