Paris climate summit, in a place in emergency

Paris climate summit, in a place in emergency

Paris’ climate summit will be held from November 30th through December 11th. This summit takes place in Paris which is still reeling from terrorist attacks on November 13th. It is currently in an emergency situation and it will likely remain so when world leaders gather in Paris. 137 Heads of States have already indicated that they would be present on the first day. This 2015 United Nations Climate Change Conference is going to be a huge success. This conference is expected to lead to the creation of the first global climate agreement after eighteen years. The conference was expected to host a huge march, which would have been particularly large. It is not likely to be permitted due to the current state of emergency. After the terrorist attack on November 13th that left 130 many dead, Paris security has been tightened. Public rallies are no longer allowed to take place, which is a staple of international meetings. The President of the United States, Barack Obama, is asking world leaders to demonstrate that terrorists cannot have an influence on how policymakers do business. Image: Whitehouse.gov. So, the question of ‘Have terrorist attacks had any impact on the outcome of Paris meeting?’ is a possible ‘Yes. Policymakers might feel less pressure, if there isn’t any protests. But, international meetings like Paris tend to get overshadowed every year by problems elsewhere in the world, such as the EU financial crisis or wars in Middle East. Pilita Clark, writing in the Financial Times quotes Andrew Steer from the US-based World Resources Institute environment group who stated that “I believe, if anything it stiffens spine in terms of determination in order to really solve the greatest collective action problem of history.” It is unlikely that heads of state will cancel their Paris trip and are singled out for not being in solidarity with France. If they do plan to go, it is likely that they will want to return home with some sort of deal. Although they will be only there the first day of the meeting, the leaders set the tone. According to most media outlets around the globe, terrorist attacks actually have strengthened leaders’ resolve and determination to achieve their goals. From November 30 through December 11., the 2015 United Nations Climate Change Conference in Paris will take place. Barack Obama says we need a deal. US President Barak Obama urged world leaders to not allow Paris terrorists to undermine the UN climate change conference. Today, President Obama stated that “It’s absolutely crucial for every country and every leader to send a message that the cruelty of a few killers doesn’t stop the world doing vital business.” He also said that all leaders around the globe had to tell the terrorists responsible for the deaths of at least people that “we’re not afraid”. Craig Bennet is the UK’s CEO of Friends of the Earth. He fears terrorist attacks will lead to a weaker agreement. According to The Guardian, Mr. Bennett said that Hollande would like to have a settlement at the end. The deal might not have been as successful as we thought. Paris may be seen by some countries as a failure. However, we do have a deal that works.
