We have enough signatures to hold a Referendum against California’s Plastic Bag Ban, SB 270.. California’s single-use plastic bag ban has been approved by several counties and cities. Jon Berrier (spokesman for American Progressive Bag Alliance) said the ban was a fraud.
To qualify, the group will need 505,000 valid signed documents. Berrier stated that this gives Californian voters the chance to vote on the repeal of legislation that will cost them billions of dollars. American Progressive Bag Alliance (APBA), issued this update: “The APBA collected more 800,000 signatures than California voters.
The APBA will submit the final petitions before today’s December 29th deadline. We believe the Secretary of state’s office will validate the 504,760 signatures required to qualify for the referendum on November 2016. This was an illegal deal made between union bosses and grocers in order to defraud Californians out of millions of dollars in bag fees. It did not provide any public benefits. This is an important step in our effort to repeal this terrible, job-killing law.
We look forward to giving Californian voters the opportunity to speak out at the 2016.” ballot box. Manufacturers claim that banning plastic bags would lead to job loss. He claims that instead of money being used for environmental programs, the money will be donated to California Grocers Association. Mark Murray, the Executive Director at California vs. Big Plastic said that plastic will be the beneficiary.
Follow the money. Murray stated that plastic bag companies have spent $3.2million to get this on the ballot to allow them to continue selling plastic bags in California. As a way to reduce litter and protect marine life, the ban would be gradually implemented at supermarkets and large grocery stores starting July. The referendum will be on the November 2016, ballot if enough signatures are received by the Secretary of State’s Office.
