Astronomers were stunned to discover the four quasars in a huge cloud of cool dense gases. They calculated the likelihood of such a discovery was 1-in-10-million. They should not exist, according to scientific theories. It is quite remarkable to find one quasar, which is a rare and incredibly bright core deep in space. Scientists from the Max-Planck Institute, University of California Santa Cruz, Switzerland and ETH Zurich, Germany said that it was mind-boggling to find four of these quasars within close proximity of each other. Because quasars only occur in a brief period that all galaxies go through, and because the massive black hole at the center of every galaxy consumes matter at an incredibly high rate, they are rare. There is a one in ten million chance that you will find four quasars within close proximity to each other. Image: Science. The super-hot material falling into the black holes makes it glow hundreds of times brighter than all its host galaxies. Scientists reported that the quasar quartet was discovered during a survey with the W. M. Keck telescope, located near Mauna Kea’s summit in Hawaii. They are found in the center of an extremely crowded area of the early Universe with more than average numbers of galaxies. These voracious black holes likely eat the cool gas cloud. These four quasars, located around 10 million light-years from each other, appear like a cluster of galaxy galaxies. This is a large conglomeration that was formed during the Universe’s formative years. Quasars don’t fit scientifically according to numerical simulations. This should only occur in regions with more hot and dense gas. Scientists claim their discovery is either cosmic fluke or the current theories about how large structures are created in the Universe need to be revised. In an abstract in the journal, they wrote: “Our discoveries imply that most massive structures within the distant universe have a tremendous supply (1011 sun masses) of cool dense (1 cm-3) gas. This is contrary to current cosmological simulations.” Science. Published 15 May 2015. DOI: 10. 1126/science.aaa5397.
