Former leader of the Scottish National Party Alex Salmond claimed the SNP would exert its “power” to overthrow a minority Labour government in order to adjust budgets in Scotland’s favor. Salmond stated that if Labour leader Ed Miliband was unable to enter Downing Street without the support of the SNP, his party would pay a steep price. Salmond stated that if you have the balance you will hold the power. “I hope that the decisive bloc of SNP MPs will push Labour Party in another direction,” Mr. Salmond stated. On the day of Miliband’s visit to Scotland in the pre-election period, polls show that the SNP has a clear lead, Mr. Salmond made comments which are yet another nail in Labour’s coffin. Anna Soubry, Tory defense minister, jumped on Mr. Salmond’s comments during a series of television interviews and called them “terrifying”. The Conservatives soon released an election campaign video. It shows the ex-SNP leader, playing the pipe while Mr. Miliband moves. A voice of doom warns that Mr. Salmond will be able “call the tune”. Jim Murphy, the leader of Scottish Labour, stated that the SNP wouldn’t have any chips to negotiate with, after the SNP had rejected any agreement with the Tories. In an interview on the BBC’s Andrew Marr show, Salmond stated that it would be great for Scotland if there were a significant number of SNP candidates in May’s general elections. M. Salmond answered that any minority government must negotiate to get a majority. It is impossible to ignore reality. Mr. Salmond said that a coalition was unlikely given Labour’s rejection of that possibility. It would likely be a vote by vote deal. He is certain that Scottish independence will happen in the very near future. His party could include a promise to hold a second referendum in its manifesto for the 2016 Scottish election.
