Transmission lines are used for the transfer of electricity from a substation to various distribution lines. The line transmits a voltage and current wave from one end to the other. A conductor is a piece of metal that has an uniform cross section throughout the length of the line. Air around the line serves as insulation between conductors. The bulk electricity network is made up of generators, transmission lines which transmit power to loads and loads that consume power. The control over these electrical networks is limited. They are vast and interconnected like a network. Each transmission line is limited in its ability to handle power at once. So, the network of generators and cables is operated according to each line’s power flow limits. Power flowing from generators is controlled by the laws of Physics. This states that power flows along lines in accordance to their electrical characteristics. The properties of each line in the network influence the power flowing through them. If a single line in a network is unable to conduct power at a given point, then the entire network will suffer. The network can also be improved by eliminating a line. When optimal transmission switching occurs, transmission lines can be easily switched into and out of the network. This allows for the best use of power generation dispatch, and maximises the efficiency of bulk electricity networks. Transmission Lines An electrical tower supports the conductors of the lines and keeps them high above ground. These lines transmit high voltage voltage across a large distance using a direct current of high voltage. Towers made of steel are strong enough to support the conductors. Transmission line parameters The parameters of transmission lines are determined by these parameters. Limitations and parameters for transmission lines. These parameters are resistance, shunt conductance (capitance), capacitance, and inductance. These parameters are uniformly distributed along the transmission lines, which is called the distributed parameter. Shunt admittance is made up of the conductance and capacitance, while the resistance and inductance are the series impedance. Below are some important parameters about how transmission lines work. Line Independence The current flowing through the transmission lines induces a magnetic flux. The variation in magnetic flux caused by a change of current in the transmission lines is what causes Emf to be inducible in the circuit. Magnetic flux changes determine the intensity of the induced electromagnetic field. The resistance to current flowing through the conductor is caused by the generation of emf within the transmission line. This parameter is known as the “inductance” of the line. Line capacitance. Air acts in the line as a medium for dialectical communication. The air acts as an insulation and permits the flow of current while conducting it. The capacitor that is between conductors is made up of this dielectric medium. It allows for an increase in line capacity or storage of electrical energy. The present charge per unit potential difference is the capacity of the conductor. In long transmission, the capacitance is an important parameter. However, for short transmission it is not. Capacitance can have an impact on the voltage regulation, stability, and power factor of long transmission. Shunt Conductance When the conductor is energized, the air acts as an insulation medium. However, currents can still flow through dielectric media due to imperfections when the voltage in the conductor alternates. The current known as leakage current depends on several atmospheric factors, such as moisture and pollution in the air as well as surface deposits. The term shunt conductance is the result of a leakage between conductors. Shunt conductance can be measured in Siemens units. It is indicated by current flow equations with the symbol Y. Many factors go into calculating the transmission line’s performance. The percentage of voltage regulation for transmission lines can be calculated by adding these factors to a formula. These factors include the sending end voltage, the sending end power factor and the sending end current. The transmission loss. The regulation. The limits of power flow in steady-state conditions. The limit of power flows during transient conditions. This formula is used to calculate the voltage regulation for the transmission lines. Voltage regulation refers to the variation in voltage’s magnitude as they travel through transmission lines. This formula can be used to determine the efficiency of transmission lines. It is the sum of input power and output power. Notable points: Admittance is the measure of electrical circuit capability. The admittance is the measure of how efficient the transmission lines are. Siemens is the unit used to measure admittance. It is represented by the symbol “Y Impedance”. This is opposite to admittance. This unit measures the difficulty in the transmission line during AC flow. It measures the impedance of ohms. The symbol z denotes it.
