Google Home: A Complete Guide to Google’s Smart Speakers

Technology blog

You may be wondering if this relatively new technology around smart speakers is something for you, or you may have bought a smart speaker and want to get started? In this text, you can read more about Google’s smart speakers, Google Home and the Google Home Mini. We’ll tell you what Google Home is for, what you can do with this product and what bugs it has had before.

What is Google Home?

Google Home is a smart speaker from the well-known Google search giant, and it was primarily intended to compete with the popular Amazon Echo.

Google Home can do several things, such as playing music. However, it is primarily designed to be a tool for Google Assistant, Google’s voice-activated virtual assistant. This speaker is connected to the internet. Google’s smart speaker listens to its environment, which requires you to address it with certain predetermined words. So Google Home does not record or listen to you unless you start with the specific commands.

You also have the option of using Google Assistant through other different smart speakers. In addition to voice commands, you can also use Google Home to, for example, adjust the volume or mute it completely.

Plays music

As we have already mentioned, you can use Google Home to play your favorite music. You can use it as a regular bluetooth speaker, or you can simply tell Google Home which song you want to listen to. You can also search for songs based on song lyrics or to start a new playlist based on a particular genre.

Google finds songs from a variety of streaming services such as Google Play Music, Youtube and Spotify. In the Google Home app, you can select one of these by default, and it will then search for songs or playlists there first. If you want to change service, just ask Google Home. You can also sync Google Home with other speakers, and you also have the option of playing music through Chromecast or via Bluetooth. Google Assistant can even play music on your TV (through Chromecast) where you can, for example, ask it to play your favorite program from various streaming services.

Ready to help you

You can ask your Google Home to perform simpler tasks such as doing searches online or checking your calendar. Instead of picking up your mobile phone and entering your search, you can now just tell your smart speaker what you want to look for. You will then have the search result read out loud for you, and the fact is that the voice search works surprisingly well.

According to a survey by GlobalWebIndex, voice searches accounted for one-third of all search traffic and the figure is expected to rise to 50% by 2020.

Google Home in the smart home

Routines make it easy to control several different smart devices with a single command, and they also get better. In the past, you have only been able to choose between different pre-programmed options, but nowadays you can design the command that activates the routine and add what you want, such as podcasts, calendar updates, and music playlists. During the latter part of the year, these routines will be integrated with the Google Clock app, which is an alarm that can activate your morning routine.

With customizable routines and more than 10,000 compatible devices, Google Home has become quite comfortable in the smart home. You can synchronize a variety of devices with your smart speakers, such as thermostats, security systems, and smart clocks, lamps, and locks. Google has expanded the list of compatible devices and made it easier to control them with natural commands.

You’ll need to use your Google Home app to sync your Google Account with the smart device account you want to control, but you can then control the devices with a simple voice command. You can also add them to different rooms and control multiple units at the same time by issuing a command prompting it to turn off all the lights in the living room. You can also add them to your routines.

Bugs

Although Google has done a good job of adding various features to its range of smart speakers, the company had its share of problems with Google Home. Perhaps most important is that Google has struggled to try to catch up with its main competitor, namely Amazon Echo and Amazon Echo Dot.

The competition between Google and Amazon in the smart speaker segment has largely been good for customers as both companies try to transcend each other with newer and better features. However, this has resulted in a scam going on Youtube, where Amazon stopped selling Google products on the site. Google then withdrew YouTube rights from Amazon’s speakers.

The launch of the Google Home Mini has also encountered problems, for example when a user discovered an error that caused the speaker to record all the time instead of starting to record after saying the command. Although Google quickly fixed the problem, discussions about user privacy came. A hacker also discovered potential vulnerabilities in the code, which could, for example, restart the speaker. Google thought this was wrong and needed to be on the same WiFi network to access the code.
