The federal government has announced India’s first offshore power plant. The 100-megawatt Project will be constructed off Gujarat, Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s home state. The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy signed a Memorandum of Understanding. This MoU was also signed by a variety of state agencies and corporations, such as the Gujarat Power Corporation and the National Institute of Wind Energy. Funding for the project and environmental assessments will be provided by the government. Public officials claim that state subsidy will be given to power transmission. Shri Piyush Goyal (Minister for Power and Energy) described this project as an opportunity to develop renewable energy resources within India. Renewable energy was the best option, Mr. Goyal stated. According to India’s Ministry of Power and Energy, the proposal included a subsidy to set up the transmission and evacuation infrastructure of offshore wind power. It also includes financial support to carry out studies like oceanographic surveys and wind resource assessments. It will be a demonstration project of offshore wind in India, which should provide sufficient learning for India to expand into the sector and take up other viable projects. All cabinet ministers have been notified. Over 22,000MW of wind generation capacity is already available in the country. The Ministry of Power and Energy reports that approximately 7.5GW of global offshore wind energy projects have been completed in the UK, Denmark (1.2GW), Belgium (7GW), Germany (6GW), China (0.54GW), Germany (0.56GW), Germany (0.55GW), China (0.43GW), Sweden (0.22GW), and the Netherlands (0.22GW).
