Millions upon millions of spiders have invaded Memphis’ homes and made a web stretching for approximately half a mile. For people suffering from extreme fear or rational fear of spiders, this must be a nightmare. Memphis residents claimed that they were helpless when hundreds of spiders infested their homes. Residents said that the web was similar to morning dew, and looked almost like frost. It covered several houses across the street. Frances Ward and Debra Lewis, neighbors of Ida Morris, told WMC Action News 5 they are not seeing any progress in getting rid of them. The web was so large that it covered half a mile of roads and grass. Ms. Morris stated that she had seen 20 spiders on her porch in the past day. This area should be cleaned up by local authorities. They also need to spray the spiders for safety. Children are running about. “A spider could bite children or any other object.” Lewis stated that the problem is making it difficult for residents to live in their houses. You can’t sit down in the house, they are all over the walls and on the doors. “We have been killing spiders now for approximately an hour,” Ms. Lewis stated in reference to a friend’s house. Unnoticed spiders experts say that even though they are often present in large numbers, the spiders should not be a problem for local residents. Steve Reichling of Memphis Zoo said that it was a massive dispersal by millions of small spiders who have been there for years, but were not noticed until now. They could be young spiders (millions) in an emergence event or small species of sheetweb spiders that leave for reasons unknown to them. Many spiders are hidden in fields or meadows and go about their business unnoticed and unseen by humans. It would be a shame to live in an environment where these things are not possible. “The presence of these spiders at this location tells us that everything is fine with nature.” The locals agree that Mr. Reichling’s assurance sounds good until they discover that the spiders are everywhere in your house.
