It’s easier for consumers to work together when they negotiate lower electricity prices. Researchers at Heriot-Watt University, Southampton University, and Centre for Alternative Energies and Atomic Energy (Paris) found that switching energy providers can result in lower electricity bills for large numbers of customers. Many customers join collectives to switch suppliers, or negotiate group purchasing schemes as utility bills continue to climb in the UK. These schemes include Big Deal and People Power. These schemes have saved customers up to a third on their electric bills, which has helped thousands. These schemes can be used to form more efficient groups. This was proven by the research team. The model was designed to assist consumers in forming more efficient buying groups, and reduce switching risks. The problem with current tariffs is that not all customers will be able to use the same tariff. They may have made a better financial decision by switching suppliers in many cases. Heriot-Watt University’s Dr. Valentin Robu explained this at the AAAI Artificial Intelligence Conference in Canada: “Electricity suppliers purchase from the wholesale market, where electricity prices tend to be significantly lower. Although there are many ways that they can sell it to consumers, they typically predict how much electricity they will need and then pass the premium price to customers to compensate for any loss. This is why group buying is so important. Although everyone is uncertain about the future, we have shown that group buying can help consumers gain market size, reduce risk, and get better prices. Prediction of use tariff In our new group purchasing models, customers start with a prediction-of-use rate. Based on their past usage, it predicts future electricity consumption. Based on these patterns, customers can choose from one of many types of consumer groups that offer different tariffs. Flat tariff: This is a better option than the flat rate provider tarrifs. The consumer pays only per unit of consumption, regardless of what his/her predictions are. They analyzed the data to determine trends in consumption for 3 ,000 UK consumers. The team also used techniques in artificial intelligence and coalition theory to find the most effective solution for every consumer. Research team. The research team. Although we know how to make the best decision, consumers are often reluctant to switch providers. Valentin Robu and Meritxell Vinyals authored the study, “Efficient Buyers Groups for Prediction of Use Electricity Tariffs.”
