Much of the Middle East region is home to oil and gas resources that meet 96% the country’s energy needs. Only four percent of the country’s energy needs can be met by sustainable power sources. It is difficult to develop sustainable power infrastructure due to the region’s vast oil resources. Although there are major obstacles, the Middle East government is working to improve their power infrastructures. The goal of the Middle East government is to produce 6% of their energy needs from renewable power by 2020.. The region’s electricity utilization is growing at seven percent annually. The main reason for this expansion is GDP growth. The Gross Domestic Product is the measurement of GDP. The government wants to ensure that the growth of renewable energy is a key part. Sun and wind power Wind power, also known as wind energy, is the process of capturing and using energy that’s moving through air (i.e. wind) to produce electricity. The sun’s energy is captured and converted into solar power. Because the Middle East is rich in sunlight and wind it makes it an ideal place to develop solar and wind power. According to the Desertec Industrial Initiative , the Arab region is more economic than other regions of the globe. Twoty-two Middle East governments are working closely together to expand and develop electricity generation from renewable resources. In collaboration with the League of Arab states and IRENA, they are under the supervision of RCREEE (the Regional Center for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency). Prospects RCREEE announced several members’ goals and objectives in renewable energy. Morocco plans to produce 40% its electricity from renewable sources by 2030., among other things. Saudi Arabia, Qatar and Egypt are all aiming to achieve 20% energy generation from renewable sources by 2020.. These targets don’t include innovative projects that are currently primarily focused on the generation of electricity from solar and wind energy. Researchers currently work on Photo Voltaic Control (PV), Concentrated Solar Power, (CSP) and other areas. Each Arab nation has established departments in their ministries that support renewable energy development as well as RET (renewable technology). The Arab world is made up of 22 Arabic speaking nations. The region has a population of about 423,000,000. The challenges of renewable energy development. Renewable energy development presents challenges. Like any new venture, it isn’t without its difficulties. Many estimates can hinder the achievement of planned developments. These obstacles can be overcome if the countries cooperate, which is what they are. Currently, the Arab countries collaborate in building sustainable power source plants (nonhydropower) of a total capacity of 6.4 GW. It is sufficient electricity to power a 2.5 million-person city. Difficulties Lack of political will. As with many new projects, it is difficult to achieve success if the will is not there. It is essential to show a strong commitment to the development of renewable energy, even if there are many benefits to oil-based infrastructures. Petroleum exploration, and other oil-based activities in the Middle East provide well-paid employment opportunities. Lack of a clear target and procedure: Some countries haven’t announced specific goals or objectives with numbers. This major problem must be solved by countries. Only six 22 countries have an established legal framework. This includes Tunisia, Jordan, Morocco Palestine, Syria and Palestine. There is still much to be done for the other 18 nations. A proper legal framework is essential for progress. Large-scale projects will be difficult to organize without it. In some countries, governments help individuals and businesses with their electricity bills by providing support arrangements. These arrangements don’t include support for electricity from renewable sources. Renewable energy projects will not have a chance without a level playing ground. There are also money problems. Even though their fuel costs are low, some governments are reluctant to allocate scarce resources for new projects. This challenge is somewhat similar to the one mentioned earlier. Knowledge: Many of these countries do not possess the required know-how. You can’t do much with all your money and willpower if there isn’t enough expertise. SWOT analysis revealed that there are a handful of countries which have made serious efforts to develop renewable energy resources.
