Dozens braved freezing conditions to get those Severn Bore surfing waves. These waves can take you miles up the estuary at 13 km/h. Severn Bore occurs when an incoming tide presses against the current that is moving in the other direction. This creates a powerful wave which can travel great distances. These waves are a favorite of surfers. Starting slightly upstream from Sharpness, the Severn bore can reach as high as Maisemore.
