Elon Tesla is the CEO of SpaceX, while Stephen Hawking is a theoretical physicist and cosmologist. Hawking was also the Director of Research at the Centre for Theoretical Cosmology in the University of Cambridge. Bill Gates (founder of Microsoft Corporation) has been also nominated. These men were nominated because they expressed concerns over the last year about the potential future dangers of Artificial Intelligence. Professor Hawking said once that “the development of full Artificial Intelligence could spell the death of the human race.” They were 19th-century British textile workers who protested new labor-saving technologies such as spinning frames, power looms and stocking frames, which were created during the industrial revolution. ITIF writes “For 2015, we present 10 nominees and invite readers to vote for the organization or individual they believe has done the most to smash the engines of innovation.” (Image Data From: itif.org/publications) The Luddites feared these new machines would replace them with less-skilled, poorly-paid labourers, leaving them out of work. It was a vicious movement that culminated in an entire rebellion across Northwestern England. This required the deployment of large numbers of military troops to subdue. A Luddite is a person opposed to the use of new technology. Fear that artificial intelligence may mean the end of humankind According to ITIF, the organisers the annual Luddite Award. Over the past year, prominent scientists, including Bill Gates and Stephen Hawking, expressed concerns that AI could be lost control in the near future. This could pose a serious threat. Paranoia over evil machines has been thriving in pop culture for 200 decades. ITIF wrote in a report that these ideas continue to hold the public’s attention, due in large part to their widespread representation in movies, books and music. In 2014, there were many blockbuster films with high-tech villains like Ex Machina and Terminator: Genisys. ITIF gives this award to those who oppose science and tech advances to Neo-Luddites. Today’s Luddite may no longer have a sledgehammer but he/she has something far more powerful – bad opinions. “In fact, the neoLuddites target everything, from artificial intelligence and new Internet apps to genetically modified organisms. ITIF stated that they are looking for a world where there is little risk and innovation or controlled change. They are highly intelligent, creative and innovative. These guys aren’t technophobes. They shouldn’t be ridiculed because they express concern. ITIF stressed that intelligent devices could be smart enough to take over the world and misunderstand artificial intelligence. ITIF says there is no danger in this century. ITIF questions whether these systems ever will develop autonomy and, if so, when. ITIF asserts that scaring the public with sci-fi scenarios will make it more difficult to fund AI research funding. ITIF warns that a sustained anti-AI campaign can endanger any funding potential for research and development. There are ways to manage it responsibly. ITIF stated that “What legislator would like to be called the godfather of technology that has destroyed humanity’?” On the other side, reputations are the least of one’s concerns if everyone is dead. You can vote at this Survey Money website. According to the BBC, Bill Gates stated that he was in the group concerned with superintelligence. The machines can do many jobs and will not have super intelligence. If we do it right, that should be good news.” “Many decades later though the intelligence will be strong enough to cause concern. Elon Musk, and others agree on this. I don’t get why people don’t worry about AI. Video by Elon Musk
