Major Tim Peake, a UK astronaut plans to complete a 26.2-mile marathon from the ISS and be the first person to orbit Earth. At the same time, April’s London Marathon begins, he will be running on a treadmill. The Prince’s Trust was founded by Frederick John Pervin and the Prince of Wales in 1976 to support young people. He will run to raise funds. Major Peake will take off at Baikonur Cosmodrome, Kazakhstan, on December 15,. He says that he will attach a harness to the treadmill, in microgravity, so that he doesn’t just fly into the air when he starts moving his legs. Major Peake must train several weeks to run a space marathon. This will allow him to lose muscle mass and bone densities. (Image: twitter.com/astro_timpeake) Earlier this week, the European Space Agency announced that Peake’s stay in space will be extended by 1 month, meaning he will be aboard the International Space Station (ISS) for 173 days. Peake will watch the London race on big screens. He will also be running the marathon for the spaceman. Major Peake, a seasoned marathon runner who enjoys triathlon, cross-country running and caving, said that the London Marathon was a global event. Let’s make it a global event. The thing I’m most looking forward to is that I can still interact with everybody down on Earth.” “I’ll be running it with the iPad and watching myself running through the streets of London whilst orbiting the Earth at 400km above the surface and going 27,000km per hour.” “One of the biggest challenges I’ll be facing is the harness system. The harness system is the biggest challenge I’ll face in microgravity. I’d be floating if I did not strap down to the treadmill. NASA astronaut Tim Kopra and Russian cosmonaut Yuri Malenchenko are currently in Baikonur. This quarantine was done to reduce the chance of them getting sick or spreading germs before they leave for space. Image: pbs.twimg.com. He did not beat his personal record in 1999,. However, he finished the London Marathon in just 3 hours and 18 mins. Major Peake doubts that he’ll be able beat, or even match this personal record. Major Peake said, “I doubt I will be setting any personal records.” “I’ve decided to set myself a time goal between 3: 30 and 4 hours.” Microgravity significantly decreases the muscle mass of astronauts. To minimize these effects, they must do daily exercise. Hugh Brasher is the London Marathon’s Event Director. He stated that “Tim’s mission will undoubtedly incite a generation to explore science, and space. “We hope this incredible marathon in space will also encourage that generation to run.” Is Major Peake’s marathon in space setting a new standard in sports in the cosmos? (Image: virginmoneylondonmarathon) Still plenty to do before lift off Before blast off, the astronauts will need to undergo medical checks, take part in physical training exercises, prepare experiments, and carefully study and rehearse the plans for the six-hour flight to ISS. NASA, the American space agency said that NASA has several ongoing experiments. These will be continued in space by NASA scientists and crew as they study radiation and blood circulation. These experiments are expected to benefit both future and current spacecraft crews as well as Earth citizens. Major Peake is a retired army helicopter pilot and will be traveling on the left side of the Soyuz TMA M capsule’s capsule. He will also serve as Commander Malenchenko’s copilot. Six other astronauts will be waiting to meet them at ISS. Are you interested in being a part of Major Peake’s Prince’s Trust team? Continue reading. Image: Prince’s Trust.
