Britain will be facing strong winds and heavy rains for 3 months. This is according to a Met Office report that was only available to local emergency services personnel and councillors. According to the Met Office report, November’s unusually mild weather will soon change. The Sun tabloid in Britain claims that the report, which we weren’t supposed to read, warns about rainfall exceeding 1.5 feet and gale force winds. Temperatures could plummet to -14 6.8°F (early in 2016.). The 2013 floods and storms that killed 17 residents are likely to return, but with greater force and for a longer time. Many parts of Britain’s coastline will be severely damaged by the relentless storms that can occur over three months. The Sun quotes the Met Office report authors who stated that “the risk of spells windy and stormy weather is higher than usual.” The trend is towards more rainfall than usual. According to the Met Office report, El Nino, which refers to a warm-water band that forms in the Pacific Ocean’s tropical region and affects weather patterns worldwide, could prove to be the most significant since records were first created 144 years back. This would increase the risk of flooding. Jeff Knight, a Met Office climate modeler said that El Nino’s impact in Britain is not as significant as it is elsewhere. However, it can tip the scales in favor of windy and wet weather. “It makes it more likely.” According to the Met Office, the North of England is expected to be most affected. The Met Office issued 23 flood advisories and 3 flood warnings for the region so far. People who are vulnerable will find it extremely challenging to survive in the face of plunging temperatures. Strong winds can cause high waves that disrupt ferry schedules and bridge crossings. They also may accelerate erosion in several areas along the UK’s coast. Today, the National Trust warned that the Government must take immediate action to safeguard the country’s coast. Transport spokesperson Cllr Peter Box from the Local Government Association said that highway teams would continue to monitor the latest weather reports in order to keep one step ahead. Global mean temperatures hit new levels. The Met Office data so far for 2012 shows that the Earth’s average temperature is now 1 degree Celsius higher than before the industrial revolution. As our planet warms, this is a troubling sign. This is a worrying sign as our planet continues to heat due to human activity. The Met Office animated video describes El Nino and its effects on weather all over the globe.
