A motion sensor is an electronic or mechanical detector that is used to detect or detect moving objects,. It can be used to detect people, animals, heat, smoke, microwaves or anything else.
The oldest motion sensors can be found in a physical system such as a trip wire. Today’s modern sensors do not need the physical part, but they can perform measurements and detect changes with the help of electronics.
Most motion detectors are used to detect motion, they can be connected to a lamp that detects that something physical is moving in the area that the sensor should cover when it is dark outside and turn on the lamp. Such a sensor can keep unwanted people away from an area so as not to attract attention.
They are also common in integrations with burglar alarms to detect movements in, for example, a store or in a home alarm. The sensors can also be set so that, for example, a dog or a cat in the home does not trigger the alarm so that you can leave your animals at home and even then activate your home alarm, depending on the type of motion sensor light you opt for.
Using motion detectors when entering a room, for example a toilet, makes it easier, especially in public toilets, so you do not have to spread bacteria via a light button. These sensors that light lamps are useful in public areas. Motion sensors are very useful in everyday life, for example, they can detect when they have to open automatic doors to various public buildings such as department stores or similar. In other words, sensors can be used not only for lamps, but also for activating different functions, such as a door.
An electronic motion detector consists of an optical, microwave or acoustic sensor which in most cases acts as a transmitter for lighting. But a passive sensor only senses a signal sent by the object itself. Changes in the optical, microwave or acoustic field in the vicinity of a device are interpreted by electronics with different technologies. Most inexpensive motion detectors can detect up to a distance of about 5 meters. Sensors that are part of specialized systems are more expensive but also usually have a longer range. Tomographic motion sensor systems can cover much larger areas thanks to the fact that they consist of radio waves that at different frequencies penetrate most walls and obstacles, these can also detect several places and then not only where the detector is located.
Many motion detectors today use several techniques to minimize the risk of an error signal. If a detector uses a couple of different techniques in its sensors, both sensors must be activated for them to trigger. This is to minimize errors. For example, a motion sensor can sense heat and light changes, as in a fire alarm. If it were only a light change, there would be no alarm or if it were the other way around.
A motion sensor can also start camera recordings or a camera that takes photographs when the sensor is triggered. This is useful for monitoring.
What is the difference between a light source with a light sensor and a light source with a motion sensor?
A light source that only has a light sensor lights up when it is dark and goes out again when it is light. It is therefore on constantly in the dark. A light source with a motion sensor also has a built-in light sensor and lights up automatically when movements happen in the dark. It does not light up when movement happens in daylight.
Many light sources with motion sensors detect movements via microwaves and can therefore be placed in luminaires with a glass cover and still work.
The light source thus does not have to “see” the movement to be turned on, but reacts to the vibrations that the movements emit. The sensor is sensitive and in some cases, it can even feel vibrations through walls. For example, if you have a light source with a motion sensor outside the front door and you move inside the front door, the lamp can light up.
What is a sensor lamp?
When we talk about sensor-controlled lights, we usually talk about either those that are controlled with only a light sensor or a combination of motion and light sensor. The most common form is of course the one with only a light sensor that is switched on and off depending on how dark it is outside.
Lamps with both light sensor and motion sensor are often used to illuminate an area and only light up when moving in the area and it is dark outside. These are most often used for outdoor lighting and work lighting.
Light sources with built-in light sensor
There have long been different types of light sources on the market with light sensors, but still the development has progressed and there are many different products on the market to choose from. You have been given several opportunities to choose the right one considering how the lamp should be used. They work best when the lighting conditions for all of them are comparable so that they are lit at the same time or that the lamps are so far apart that it does not matter that they are not lit at exactly the same time.
In order for the lights to switch on and off automatically, you need to have the switch in the on position at all times. In the summer when it is bright all the time, if you live in such a location, you can of course turn off the power switch.
There are a few things you should keep in mind when it comes to light sources with a built-in sensor
It can happen that the light sources flash at dusk, this is because it can be difficult for the light sources to detect when it is completely dark (especially during the summer months when it takes a long time for the darkness to fall).
If you have several sensors in different places, it may therefore also happen that they are not lit exactly at the same time. For example, if you have darker areas in the garden, these can be lit before others that are placed in brighter places.
You should also keep in mind that you must have the power switch on for the lights to turn on and off automatically. If you do not want it switched on during the day, you can of course turn it off, but then have to turn it on again when it is dark for the lights to work.
