What is eLearning? ELearning refers to electronic learning and training via electronic resources delivered over the Internet. Essentially, elearning is online education, training, or learning delivered over the internet through a computer or some other electronic device. The process may include text, graphics, video, animation, speech (in case of audio modules), and more. Any resource used in eLearning must be appropriate for a particular purpose and delivered in a manner that promotes learning.

 

Today, there are many different types of eLearning. Some forms are web based instructional courses or virtual classrooms where students and instructors can meet virtually. Others are distance-learning which means that learners are enrolled on a particular course on a remote server, usually at a major university or college. Still others are LMS (learning management systems) which provide the framework on which the content is delivered via a network of computers. In eLearning, the tools used for delivery facilitate the learning process.

 

Why is online education so attractive? For starters, it allows for flexibility, convenience, and accessibility. Students no longer have to travel to or from school, sit in a classroom, and interact with a teacher. Instead, they can get all of their learning done while engaging in virtual learning. With the advent of distance learning and online colleges, people have found new reasons to attend traditional college and universities.

 

There are a number of key benefits to elearning. One of the most notable benefits is that it allows instructors to provide an added touch and human interaction to their classes. ELearning offers instructors an opportunity to share their expertise, show off their own talents, and encourage student participation. With elearning modules that require training approval, corporate training departments can ensure that corporate training programs comply with local and federal regulations. An eLearning course or module can be used to deliver new business information, teach employees about current business practices, or instruct staff about the latest technology. In addition, many companies choose to use eLearning modules to enhance their overall training programs. For example, by allowing employees to access training materials through the Internet, it makes it much easier for them to complete assignments on their own. In contrast, if they were to use a printed book, they may have difficulty finding the information that they need, which may require them to drive around town or search for the exact text that they need. Another benefit of elearning is that it allows training departments to make training more engaging for the end-user.

 

Even though there are many differences between eLearning and traditional education, some similarities do exist. Both methods generally utilize some type of interactive media and video conferencing, although eLearning tends to use video conference capabilities. As well, both eLearning and video conference based training are much less expensive than traditional education programs, which can make them a great option for businesses that are on a tight budget. Also, eLearning courses tend to be much easier to navigate, which means that instructors can create a more productive learning environment. Finally, eLearning can be accessed from virtually any location, whereas classroom-based training can only be administered in the workplace or at the school itself.
