How to clean iPhone speakers without damaging them

Apple releases occasional maintenance and bug fix updates for iOS. The iPhone’s hardware also needs to be taken care of in order for it to work properly. Your iPhone can collect tiny particles of dust over time in the microphones and speakers. After a while, you might notice a muffled or distorted sound from your iPhone’s speakers. It is a good idea to clean your iPhone speakers at least once a month if you live in dusty conditions.

We have discussed the best ways to repair iPhone microphone issues and how to disinfect iPhone. In this article, we’ll discuss the methods to clean iPhone speakers.

Clean Your iPhone Speakers

As you may know, starting with iPhone 7 series, Apple switched to the dual-speakers setup on all the iPhones. The microphone is located near the top of the speaker. The second speaker is located at the bottom, near the connector for the lighting. We will now discuss the cleaning steps.

Use Toothbrush

Users can use a dry toothbrush for cleaning their iPhone’s speaker. Use a clean, dry toothbrush to scrub the speaker surfaces. If you have some rubbing alcohol on hand, dip the toothbrush into it. Then rub the toothbrush onto the bottom and top of your iPhone speakers.

A few cautionary words. The alcohol should not be dipped into the toothbrush. Don’t use too much pressure when cleaning your speaker. Keep it soft. Don’t use water to clean the speaker. Water doesn’t evaporate as quickly as alcohol which can increase the risk of liquid damage to the iPhone internals.

Use Painter’s Tape

While a dry toothbrush can be used to clean iPhone speakers well, some stubborn particles may not come out. This is where masking tape and Painter’s tap are ideal. This tape is designed to prevent glue residue from being left on surfaces. This adhesive is pressure sensitive, which makes it an excellent tool for cleaning iPhone speakers.

Tear a small part of the tape. You can roll it about keeping the sticky end outside and press the tape on your iPhone speakers. Check for dust on the tap after each application. Toss it away and use a fresh tap roller to clean the area.

Use Compressed Air

Consumers use compressed-air to clean their desktops and laptop keyboards. It can also be used to clean iPhone speakers. Keep the device 9-10 inches far from the iPhone speakers and then blow the air to clean dust.

I would recommend that you don’t use compressed air too close to the iPhone speakers. You could damage your phone’s internals. This method can cause damage to the internals of your phone.

You might want to use a toothpick to clean iPhone speakers but I would advise against the practice. You should use a small, sharp toothpick. Inadvertently pushing the toothpick into the speakers could cause damage.
