Apple has officially revealed the iPhone 13 Pro Max and iPhone 13 Pro Max, the top-end models of its iPhone 13 lineup. The iPhone 13 Pro Max and iPhone 13 Pro Max have a faster A15 Bionic chip, new cameras, and a better display that can reach 1,000 nits at 120Hz ProMotion high brightness rates. The iPhone 13 Pro Max and iPhone 13 Pro Pro Max will be available at $1,099. Both models will be available for purchase starting Friday and shipping on September 24th.
Both models have Super Retina XDR displays that support variable refresh rates between 10Hz to 120Hz. They are identical in size at 6.1 inches and 6.7 inches. The phones have smaller buttons that will allow more room in the iOS status bar. They will be available in graphite (or gold), silver (or a new light bleu).
Apple claims that the new phones feature a three-camera system. The wider camera will offer better low-light photography due to its larger sensor. The ultrawide camera will also see improvements thanks to its wider aperture. The telephoto camera on the phones can now zoom up to 3x, which allows 6x optical zoom across all three cameras. All three cameras have night mode and a macro mode that allows you to capture subjects at 2cm. Both models include sensor-shift optical image stabilization.
Apple announced a new Photographic Styles feature on the software side. It looks a lot like traditional camera filters, but with a bit of computational photography. The new cinematic focus feature for the iPhone 13 is also available on the 13 Pro or Pro Max. The iPhone 13 Pro can also film at 4K/30fps in ProRes. This format gives video editors greater control over how to tweak footage after it has been shot. The base 128GB storage option will be available at 1080p/30fps. Apple claims ProRes support will become available in a future iOS 15 update.
Both devices use Apple’s A15 Bionic chip internally. This gives them the same CPU speed and GPU speeds as last year. Apple claims that the chip will be more efficient for machine learning tasks. The battery life of the 13 Pro Max and 13 Pro Max has been extended by 1.5 hours, 2.5 hours, and 2.5 hours respectively, to last on a single charge. The iPhone 13 Pro offers storage options ranging from 128GB to 1TB. This is the largest amount of storage Apple has ever provided on a smartphone. Apple claims that 5G will offer better coverage thanks to the addition of more bands.
Apple has split its flagship phone line into “Pro” and regular models for the third consecutive year. However, last year many reviewers found that there was not much difference between the iPhone 12 Pro versus the iPhone 12. The 12 Pro was equipped with a telephoto camera and lidar sensor as well as more RAM and base storage. However, its design, processor, 5G capabilities and OLED display were almost identical to the regular iPhone 12.
